The currency of Guatemala is called the quetzal. The Resplendent Quetzal is also the national bird of Guatemala.It was thought to be the spirit guide of a Mayan prince and hero, Tecún Umán, who fought against the Spanish conquest.
Because the habitat necessary for Quetzals in Guatemala has been destroyed, they have been driven towards extinction. Some migrated to Panama, but they are hard to find. Our guide said we were blessed to see 8 on our excursion.
Magically rainbows, frequently several at the same time, appear every morning in the same place. The “Baha Reiki” it was called, a fine mist charged with energy, forms with the front coming from the Pacific Ocean. The electricity in the air makes your hair stand up, it’s electrifying, literally. Then because its is in the same alignment with the sun, the spectacle appears. The photo of downtown Boquete shows the Baha Reiki forming.
Movies had given us misgivings about the prospect of taking a bus across the entire country of Panama. We almost expected chickens and goats to be brought aboard, thanks to Cheech and Chong. We were delighted to find comfortable seats, overhead movies, friendly people and a $12 ticket price.
Indiginous people of the Ngäbe and Buglé tribes, the largest and most significant indigenous groups in Panama maintain traditional lifestyles in small communities within and around the Volcán Barú area. Many are employed in the coffee industry, cultivating and maintaining the coffee trees, prolific in the area surrounding the extict volcano.
The workers raise families in shanties made of blue-tarps fastened to fence posts around the coffee-growing area. They wash their clothes in the abundant streams.
